Quick Sip 05: Phoebe Philo, Adjacent
Architectural sandals, second-skin flats, and intelligent summer dressing
There is a difference between buying a trend and understanding the design language of a brand.
I love the tactile side of fashion–identifying underlying materials and construction, understanding why a piece resonates through proportion or design codes, and discovering emerging brands building thoughtful identities.
In the spirit of that curiosity, I want to explore designers and brands that capture similar sensibilities.
Luxury fashion pricing has reached a point where even people deeply invested in craftsmanship and design can feel priced out of participating. While I’ll always advocate for supporting artisans and the level of work produced by great fashion houses, I’m equally interested in brands translating adjacent design vocabularies with care, integrity, and a point of view of their own.
So welcome to my new mini series: If you like [insert designer], consider this [insert brand].
This is in an effort to help you find pieces that capture a similar silhouette or spirit, with beautiful materials and thoughtful construction.
Starting with one of the most influential designers of modern fashion, and one of my favorite categories to obsess over: Phoebe Philo footwear.
If you love the Phoebe Philo Gathered ballet flats for their elongated shape, tight-lipped bow, and buttery leather softness, look at the Dear Frances Gala flat. It carries the same elegance and sculptural simplicity without feeling overly precious–like you could actually spend a day walking through the city in them.
Pairs nicely with: an elastic-waist pant, your favorite boxy tee, and a taffeta duster.
If you love the Round Flip Flop for its chunky silhouette, molded footbed, and suede straps, consider the Jude Yaga thong sandal. It has the same grounded, architectural ease, thick straps and contoured sole. Both are constructed from rich Italian leather and create dimension in an outfit without trying too hard.
Pairs nicely with: lower rise denim and 90’s-esque corduroy jacket for brunch.
If you are drawn to the Phoebe Philo Strap Sandal 75 for its exaggerated proportions and geometric criss-cross straps, the A.Emery Lulu sandal carries a similar energy. The stitched leather footbed and cylindrical heel give it a refined-but-unfussy feeling that will make summer dressing feel intelligent.
Pairs nicely with: a slip dress at an alfresco dinner somewhere port side.
And if you love the Club Slipper for its delicate stitched paneling and second-skin silhouette, the Reformation Inez pump offers a similarly sleek, close-to-the-foot shape with a wearable low block heel.
Pairs nicely with: white jeans and a monochromatic top for a day out and about.
Let me know which designer or piece you’re interested in seeing next!
